San Diego Long Distance Movers
Moving beyond San Diego County takes more planning than a bigger truck. Since 2008 we have run long distance moves three different ways, from our own crew driving your shipment door to door, to shared freight when the load is small and the budget matters. 25,120+ moves and a 4.8-star record behind the advice.
Gorilla Movers runs long distance moves out of San Diego County and will go anywhere in the country, with three ways to do it. Our own crew and truck door to door is the flagship: the same uniformed employees who load your home drive the route and set your furniture, with a committed delivery date rather than a window. It is also the most expensive, so we offer two alternatives: shared freight for smaller loads, and a partner carrier on the national network for long hauls where a flexible delivery window is worth the saving. We quote whichever fits, say plainly which one we would choose, and never charge you for a dedicated truck when a cheaper option would have served you. Intrastate moves fall under CAL T-192729, interstate under USDOT 3801918. Call 619-600-5000.
What counts as a long distance move from San Diego
Ask three moving companies what counts as long distance and you will get three different answers. Here is the practical rule: once a move crosses roughly 100 miles or a state line, it stops behaving like a local job. The crew cannot make a same-day round trip, pricing shifts from the clock to the shipment itself, and the planning window gets longer. A run from San Diego to Temecula is an extended local move. San Diego to Sacramento, Phoenix, or Seattle is genuinely long distance, and it should be quoted and staffed that way.
The regulatory line matters too. Moves that stay inside California are intrastate moves, regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission, and the carrier needs an active CAL-T permit. Ours is CAL T-192729. Cross a state line and the move becomes interstate, governed by federal FMCSA rules, which requires USDOT authority. Ours is USDOT 3801918. Before you hire anyone for a long distance move, verify both numbers. Nearly every hostage-load horror story starts with a company that could not produce them.
The distinction also changes how you pay. Local San Diego moves are billed hourly. Long distance moves are priced as a complete project based on your inventory, the route, access at both ends, and the services you add, which is exactly why the on-site survey covered below is worth 30 minutes of your time.

What are my options for moving out of state?
Three, and the honest answer is that the right one depends on how much you are moving and how firm your dates are. Most companies sell you whichever one they run and describe the others as what careless movers do. We would rather explain the trade and let you pick.
The first is our own truck and crew, door to door. The same background-checked, uniformed employees who pack and load your home in San Diego drive the route and set your furniture at the other end. No terminals, no re-stacking, no waiting for a trailer to fill, and no driver at your destination you have never met. Fewer hands on your things means fewer chances for damage, and a dedicated truck means a delivery date rather than a spread. It is also the most expensive of the three, because you are paying for a whole truck and crew to make the trip for your shipment alone.
The second is shared freight, where your shipment travels with other households. You give up the committed date and accept a delivery window, and in exchange the price drops considerably. For a studio or a one-bedroom going a long way, this is frequently the sensible choice, and quoting you a dedicated truck instead would be selling you an empty trailer.
The third is a partner carrier on the national network, which suits long hauls where your dates are flexible and coverage matters more than speed. We arrange it, and we tell you plainly that this is what is happening rather than implying our crew is driving.
What we will not do is quote the most expensive option and leave you assuming it is the only one. Ask for all three on the same inventory and compare them side by side.

Binding quotes, highway-grade packing, and storage between homes
Here is how long distance pricing works with us. A phone or video estimate is a useful starting point, but it is hourly-based and not a guarantee. For a long distance move you want a binding quote, and binding quotes are locked in with a free on-site survey. An estimator walks your home, builds a room-by-room inventory, checks access at both addresses, and hands you a firm project price. Fuel is charged on every long distance move and it is itemized up front in that quote, so the number you approve already includes it. No mystery line items appearing at delivery.
Packing for 350 to 1,500 highway miles is a different discipline than packing for a trip across town. Your shipment will absorb hours of road vibration, desert heat, mountain grades, and hard braking. Our crews pack for that reality: double-walled cartons packed tight with no dead space, paper-wrapped contents, furniture fully blanket-wrapped and banded, and every tier of the load strapped to the truck walls. You can pack yourself, hand us just the kitchen and fragile items, or turn the whole house over to a full packing crew.
Long distance moves rarely line up perfectly. Escrow closes before your new home is ready, a lease starts two weeks late, or you want to house-hunt from a short-term rental. We bridge the gap with storage in San Diego: your shipment stays loaded, wrapped, and inventoried until you call for delivery, whether that is a week or several months. One company holds custody the entire time, so nothing changes hands.
If either end of the move is a condo, high-rise, or managed community, we handle the paperwork. Certificates of insurance for buildings are standard with us, and we coordinate elevator reservations and loading dock windows so move day does not stall in a lobby.
Military PCS moves from San Diego
San Diego is home to one of the largest military communities in the country, from Naval Base San Diego and MCAS Miramar to Camp Pendleton and Naval Air Station North Island. PCS season is a fact of life here, and we have moved hundreds of service members and their families in and out of the county since 2008.
If you are taking the personally procured move route, we make the reimbursement paperwork painless: certified weight tickets, a detailed inventory, and a fully itemized invoice that finance offices accept without a fight. We also understand report dates are not suggestions. When your orders say you check in on the 15th, we build the load and transit schedule backward from that date and put it in writing.

“Last week, I moved some of my belongings into storage with Gorilla Movers. We decided to utilize the storage provided by Gorilla Movers in their warehouse on Miramar Rd. The price was very reasonable for our 3 bedroom home, as we had a lot of large furniture needing stored for the foreseeable future. The movers were kind, quick, and careful throughout the moving day. Our family will definitely use them again when it’s time to relocate out of storage and to our new home we hope to find out of state.”

All of the customers mirrors and art work were protected and packed professionally. I was very impressed by the relation between customer and their team member. I would recommend that anyone in there local area give these guys a call and opportunity. We work with many companies coming from out of state and I’d have to acknowledge this company as the most professional team I’ve seen this far. Keep up the good work of giving people the service they deserve and we wish you the best in your success.”
“Moving is stressful. Gorilla Movers did a fabulous job, and gave exemplary service (from start to finish). I will be forever grateful for them efficiently moving me out of state. The whole team worked so hard, and were kind and personable!”
“Me and my husband decided to downgrade our 4 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom house before he got into his accident. We've always done the moving ourselves but this time we couldn't because the boys were out of state and my husband couldn't do any heavy lifting so I hired the young gentlemen from Gorilla Movers. When I called to book a few of the movers, the young man who helped me over the phone informed me that they also have a packing service so I hired them for that as well. Oh these young men were so sweet and professional. They handled everything for us which cut the stress down to half.”
